Roller press bearings: shock, debris and how a failed bearing costs a plant a third of its output
What goes wrong in hydraulic roller presses, what a case-hardened bearing changes, and why repair time matters more than parts cost.
The duty
A hydraulic roller press squeezes material between two rollers under very high contact stress. The bearings at the roller ends see heavy load, shock when hard pieces enter, debris and heat. They also cannot be left to fail: when a press goes down, the plant loses a large share of its output.
What goes wrong
- Through-hardened bearings fail early in shock duty because the whole ring is hard and brittle.
- Debris that gets past the seals scratches the rollers and raceways and starts surface damage.
- A damaged double-row spherical roller bearing and its housing can stop a press. One reported case lost about 30% of a plant's production until the bearing was reconditioned.
Case-carburised rings
A case-carburised ring has a hard outer shell and a softer, tough core. The shell resists wear and rolling contact fatigue, and the core absorbs shock without cracking. In one roller press the change lasted 18 to 24 months longer than the through-hardened bearings it replaced, which gave a large cost saving.
Why the repair route matters
| Option | What happens |
|---|---|
| New bearing from stock | Fast only if stocked. Cost of parts is small next to lost production. |
| Recondition on site or at a service centre | Bearing and housing are rebuilt and reinstalled in a fraction of the time a new unit takes. |
| Wait for a new delivery | Weeks of lost output, often far more than the bearing costs. |
What to do
- Treat roller press bearings as critical spares and decide the repair route before a failure.
- Specify case-carburised spherical roller bearings for the roller ends where shock is high.
- Trend vibration and bearing temperature on both roller ends, and compare them.
- Keep seals and lubrication flow above the debris level.
Takeaway. On a roller press, the bearing's toughness matters more than its rating, and the repair route matters more than the price.
