Cement plant
Which bearing goes where in a cement plant
A map of the main machines, the bearing families used on each, and why the conditions decide the choice.
The conditions
Cement machines combine heavy loads, slow or moderate speeds, fine abrasive dust, high temperature and shock. Those conditions, not the nominal load alone, decide the bearing type.
The map
| Machine | Position | Typical bearings |
|---|---|---|
| Ball mill | Trunnion support | Spherical roller bearing housed units, or oil-film bearings |
| Ball mill | Girth gear drive and pinion shafts | Spherical roller, cylindrical roller and tapered roller bearings |
| Vertical roller mill | Roller wheel (pulverizer) | Cylindrical roller and spherical roller bearings |
| Vertical roller mill | Gear drive | Spherical roller, tapered roller and cylindrical roller bearings |
| Vertical roller mill | Separator | Large-diameter ball bearings and spherical roller bearings |
| Vertical roller mill | Hydraulic cylinder rod end | Small-bore spherical roller bearings and spherical plain bearings |
| Hydraulic roller press | Roller ends | Spherical roller and cylindrical roller bearings, with thrust bearings |
| Hydraulic roller press | Planetary gear reducer | Tapered roller, cylindrical roller and spherical roller bearings |
| Conveyors | Head, tail, take-up and bend pulleys | Housed units with spherical roller or tapered roller bearings |
| Kiln, crushers, screens | Support and drive positions | Tapered, cylindrical and spherical roller bearings |
Why each family is used
- Spherical roller bearings: they tolerate misalignment, marginal lubrication, contamination and shock, so they are the default where the shaft bends or the housing moves.
- Cylindrical roller bearings: highest radial capacity for the size, and they allow axial float. Used where the shaft position is fixed elsewhere.
- Tapered roller bearings: carry combined radial and axial loads and are used in gearboxes and where a preloaded, stiff arrangement is needed.
- Housed units: the bearing, seals and housing as one assembly, used on conveyors and fans where dust and misalignment are the issue.
Rule of thumb
- Match the bearing to the worst condition, not the average one.
- Where debris is heavy, choose seals and lubrication first and capacity second.
- Where shock is heavy (roller press), the ring and cage material matters as much as the load rating.
Takeaway. Choose the bearing for the worst condition on that shaft. In cement that is nearly always dust, shock or heat, not the nominal load.
