Cement mill gearbox: gear wear found five months before the teardown

Cement dust in the oil damaged the bearings, then the gears. The spectra showed it months before the gearbox came out.

What the case covers

Takeaway. Gear wear and bearing noise can look alike. Matching sideband spacing to known shaft speeds tells them apart, and the oil often tells you why.
