Kiln tyres and riding rings: lubrication of the biggest sliding contact in the plant
The tyre rides on support pads while the kiln turns. Solid-lubricant greases, applied in small doses through nozzles, protect both surfaces.
The contact
A rotary kiln shell turns inside tyres, and the tyres sit on support rollers. Between the tyre and its pads (or the tyre and the shell) there is slow relative sliding under very heavy load, at high temperature. It is a boundary-lubricated contact.
The lubrication
- A high-viscosity grease containing solid lubricants gives a film that stays after the oil has been squeezed out.
- The grease is dosed through nozzle blocks on the tyre, fed by a drum pump and a controller.
- The cycle is set to match the load and temperature.
Related points on a kiln
- Support roller (trunnion) bearings.
- The open gear drive (girth ring) and its pinion shaft bearings.
- The motor and the main gearbox.
Takeaway. Slow, heavy, hot and dusty: kiln lubrication is a solid-lubricant problem, delivered in small, regular doses.
